Gannawarra Shire Council has begun preparations for the upcoming fire season in the region, aiming to reduce risks on public and private properties.

The Fire Danger Period, which can be announced by the Country Fire Authority as early as October in some municipalities, is expected to be declared in the coming weeks.

“Our wet start to the year, followed by below-average rainfall during winter and early spring, has provided ideal conditions for potential fire risks,” council chief executive officer Geoff Rollinson said.

The council has partnered with other agencies, including VicRoads, to ensure fuel loads are reduced on properties and roads managed by their departments.

Slashing of vegetation and weed spraying along council-managed sealed roads will be undertaken by council staff.

Council properties will also see vegetation slashing, and fire hazard inspections will take place to identify properties where a Fire Prevention Notice may be issued to landowners.

Gannawarra residents are encouraged to assist in preparations by removing or reducing potential fire hazards from their properties.

“You can never anticipate when a fire is going to occur, so whether you live in a farming area or residential street, it is important to plan ahead and be ready for the fire season,” Mr Rollinson said.
