Greater Shepparton City Council will be hosting several candidate and voter information sessions in the lead-up to the 2024 local government elections.
Council will host community-based information sessions in Mooroopna, Tatura and Shepparton for potential candidates to get a better understanding of what the role of a councillor involves ahead of the elections that will take place on Saturday, October 26.
These sessions will include details on time commitments associated with the role, responsibilities and general requirements under the Local Government Act 2020.
It will also provide information to voters on the new ward structure for Greater Shepparton, which will start at the 2024 elections.
The decision to spilt Greater Shepparton into the new ward structure was made after an independent electoral structure review panel was appointed last year to review the electoral structure of Greater Shepparton City Council.
As a result of the review, Greater Shepparton will be spilt into nine wards, with one councillor representing each ward.
Residents will be only able to vote for candidates who have nominated for their ward. Candidates will also only be able to nominate for one ward.
Council will also be hosting a women candidate information session in the lead-up to the elections.
This session will provide a general overview of the role of a councillor, as well as explore the perceived barriers and the flexibility available to all councillors.
Attendees will also hear from a guest speaker, state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe.
The sessions are free to attend, with registrations required.
