Greater Shepparton City Council and RiverConnect are encouraging the community to participate in the 2023 Aussie Bird Count.
The count will take place during National Bird Week, from October 16 to 22.
People across the community and Australia are being asked to head outside to count as many birds as they see to help provide information on Australia’s most common bird species.
People are being encouraged to spend 20 minutes a day watching and counting the birds they can see in their local area as it will help determine the trends in bird communities over time.
Council has participated in the count since 2015.
Manager of Environment Sharon Terry said the count is a great opportunity to make a simple but important contribution to this conservation initiative.
“We invite the community to take a moment of their day to go outside and participate in this wonderful activity,” she said.
“You can get the family involved and make an important contribution to Birdlife Australia’s conservation initiatives.
“There is a large variety of birdlife on offer in our region, as well as great birdwatching spots, so everyone can take part and enjoy what we have in our own backyard.”
Some easily accessible spots to birdwatch include Archers Field in Mooroopna, Boulevard Bush Reserve, Kalinga Park and Tassicker Reserve in Shepparton, Lake Bartlett and Cussen Park in Tatura and Kialla Lakes.
Taking part in the Aussie Bird Count is easy, and results can be submitted via the Aussie Bird Count app or through the online form from October 10.
