A new Grevillea sapling has been added to the playground at Deniliquin South School in honour of National Tree Day.
The tree was gifted to the school by the Deniliquin Garden Club, in its ongoing efforts to inspire young people to get interested and involved in gardening.
South School administration manager Rose Keane said the Garden Club choose a school to donate a tree to each year for National Tree Day.
“We were pretty happy that we were chosen this year,” she said.
Deniliquin Garden Club secretary Judy Doddridge and president Sandra Cooke presented South School with the shrub and took a tour of their gardens.
“It was lovely to take Judy and Sandra on a tour of our gardens, which they seemed to enjoy very much,” Mrs Keane said.
“Judy has a relationship with South School, having been the administration manager here for more than 30 years. She also has grandchildren here, so it was particularly special for her to come back and have a look around.”
Mrs Keane said the shrub will take pride of place in their wellbeing garden, which is located between the library and the classrooms.
“It hasn’t been planted yet, but it is my mission to do so in the next few days,” she said. “We are very proud of our gardens here at South School and run a lunchtime gardening club for the students.”
