Globe Hotel takes another hit

Dan and Nat Casey, the visionaries behind the Globe Hotel's grand revival, are hoping for a change of luck after recent attempted thefts.

Two thefts in eight days have been attempted at Corowa’s Globe Hotel redevelopment.

Between Thursday April 11 and Wednesday April 17 unknown persons have attended the Globe Hotel redevelopment site and made attempts to gain access to a locked shipping container.

With the premises undergoing significant demolition and construction works, the property is locked nightly for the safety of the public, however, would be thieves have forced the rear gate to gain access.

“The rear gate that leads onto Bridge Road has been forced with persons gaining access to the property,” Sergeant Marshall of Corowa Police told the Free Press.

“They have then specifically attended the locked shipping container and attempted to gain access to it without success.”

Dan Casey, owner of the hotel, was disappointed but confident that the perpetrators would be apprehended.

“They haven’t been very smart about it,” Mr Casey said.

“They’ve left fingerprints everywhere.”

Murray River Crime Scene attended following the first attempt, and whilst doing so, it became evident that a second attempt had been made.

“When I came in to meet the forensics team it was clear that the perpetrators had been back as they had tried to grind the lock off of the shipping container,” Mr Casey said.

“But even if they had managed to get into the container, a large truck was parked in front of the container so they wouldn’t have been able to get the doors open anyway.”

As a result of the attempts, Mr Casey has now cleared the container and relocated all tools but remains light-hearted about the events.

“It’s inconvenient, obviously, and the stupid thing is, if they’d asked, I’d have given them the keys and got them to tidy it all up for me while they were at it,” he joked.

Corowa Police are encouraging anyone that may have knowledge of these offenders to contact Corowa Police Station on 02 69322899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
