NCN Health has put a call out to the region’s secondary school students who are looking for a fulfilling activity over the summer holidays.
NCN Health is looking for Year 9 to 12 students to play board or card games, chat, read or undertake other activities with residents of aged care facilities during the 2023-24 summer holidays.
Aged care facilities where volunteers could work include Irvin House Cobram, Banawah Nathalia, Karinya and Pioneers Lodge in Numurkah.
Volunteers only have to commit one to two hours a week for the six weeks of summer holidays and NCN Health provides training orientation and support.
Volunteer activities will be tailored to the individual volunteer and their interests so they can get the most out of their experience.
NCN Health workers who have worked with the volunteers have observed that the time spent with the residents has been the highlight of the volunteer’s week and volunteers grew in confidence.
NCN Health volunteer co-ordinator Jacquie Hughes said the summer volunteer program is about giving young people the chance to get involved.
“At NCN Health, we wish to expand our volunteer opportunities, especially for secondary students that are unable to volunteer after school, maybe during school holidays suits,“ she said.
“We have found people wish to contribute to their communities more, one positive outcome since COVID.”
Students must have had three COVID-19 vaccinations and the 2023 influenza vaccination.
NCN Health could complete a police check at no charge to the student.
