It’s official — digital licences will be landing on the phone screens of millions of Victorians soon.
The Victorian Government announced on Saturday, April 6, that the digital driver licence rollout for some Victorian drivers will come as early as May.
Victorians who are fully licensed drivers, motorcyclists, or heavy vehicle operators will be the first eligible to download the digital driver’s licence in May.
However, there’s a bit more of a wait for learners or probationary drivers.
The government announced they will be able to access a digital licence by 2025.
Government Services Minister Gabrielle Williams said the rollout has been coming for a long time, and the government is eager for Victorians to start using it.
“Victorians have been asking us for a digital driver licence — and from next month, millions of Victorians can access them on their phones alongside other government-issued cards like a Working with Children Check, seniors card or fishing licence,” Mrs Williams said.
This follows a successful trial of the digital driver licence in Ballarat last year, which saw more than 15,000 Victorians access their licence through the myVicRoads and Service Victoria apps.
The digital licences have undergone rigorous security and privacy testing and include a dynamic hologram and a timed QR code that businesses and authorities can scan to verify authenticity.
Another bonus to the licences is they are updated in real-time, so any changes to personal information or licence conditions will be automatic.
Until the rollout in May, the government is ramping up work with organisations that require photo identification, such as bars, restaurants, retailers, Victoria Police and Australia Post, to ensure they’re prepared for the change.
Victorians are encouraged to download either the myVicRoads or Services Victoria app, as the digital licence will automatically be uploaded to the app at the start of the rollout, and drivers will be alerted through a push notification or email.
