Greater Shepparton City Council invites the community to participate in a road safety decal pilot project in response to ongoing concerns around speeding and road safety in residential streets.
The project will see local residents offered the opportunity to secure a decal on their residential waste bins.
The decals depict an image of a small child in a running action.
The stickers are a reminder to drivers to reduce speed and be aware of road use by children.
According to the Australian Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics, over half of child deaths were on public roads in speed zones of 50 or 60km/h.
As part of this project, stickers will be directly offered to residents of Kittles Rd and Hawdon St in Shepparton and Victoria St, Tallygaroopna.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said council was working with residents to assist with speed reduction in residential streets.
“Similar campaigns have been delivered by other local government areas,” Cr Sali said.
“Working with community members to assist with speed reduction in residential streets and increasing the awareness of community safety is really important to our community.
“Council will run this pilot program with residents living in the selected streets within Shepparton and Tallygaroopna.”
Cr Sali said residents would be invited to take part, with invitations going to be sent out to the select streets in the coming days followed by a provision of a road safety decal and instructions.
“We want to keep our children safe,” Cr Sali said.
“The campaign highlights the importance of drivers being vigilant and abiding by the speed limits whilst on our region’s roads.”
Council officers will obtain feedback and collect data throughout the pilot program to inform future road safety initiatives.
