Over half of the dwellings suitable for solar panels in Kialla and Shepparton East have been fitted with the technology, according to data released by the Victorian Government this week.

Of the 5040 total suitable dwellings in the 3631 postcode, 2577 have solar panels — the highest percentage of uptake of the technology not only in a regional suburb, but across the entire state.

Shepparton (3630) has 4155 homes with solar panels out of a total of 13,644 eligible dwellings — a 30.5 per cent uptake placing it fourth out of regional suburbs.

The Andrews Government says its program of rebates and no-interest loans — including the ‘Solar Homes Program’ — has significantly reduced upfront installation costs for solar panels — in turn cutting households’ bills by an average of more than $1000.

“We’re helping record numbers of Victorians switch to solar, which is great news both for their energy bills, for jobs and for the environment,” Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said.

Eligible households can access a $1400 rebate to install solar panels, a further $1400 interest-free loan, and a further rebate of up to $1000 to replace their hot water system, cutting $3800 from upfront installation costs.

Since its introduction in 2018 the program has boosted household solar use from 14 to 27 per cent across Victoria.

“For anyone still considering installing solar, there has never been a better time to take the next step. Start by talking to a participating solar retailer to find a system that works for you,” Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said.

The suburbs of Tarneit, Truganina and part of Hoppers Crossing (3029) are the highest uptake area in suburban Melbourne, with 43 per cent of eligible homes fitted with solar panels.
