At a scheduled meeting on Wednesday, August 28, the Moira Shire Council administration carried a motion to open community consultation on a new off-leash, confined dog park in Cobram.
The proposed dog park would be located at the northern end of Colgan Park at the corners of Karook and Gemmell Sts.
“We invite residents to share their feedback on the proposed Cobram Enclosed Off-Leash Dog Park at Colgan Park,” Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson said.
“The consultation process is an important step in developing a concept plan and creating a space that meets the needs of the community, particularly dog owners and their four-legged friends.”
Council elected Colgan Park to be the site of the proposed dog park after considering a number of alternatives.
Among others, these included Cobram Scott Reserve, Apex Reserve, and Pioneer Park.
However, it was Colgan Park that came out on top.
The agenda for the meeting in question points to the absence of residential housing bordering the park, the presence of good shade, and “parking possible on Karook St when infill K & C and drainage works are completed” as a few factors that led to the decision.
The proposed dog park would be the first such park in Moira Shire to be completely fenced.
As the same agenda highlights, of all 18 off-leash dog parks in the Moira Shire, not one is completely enclosed.
In council’s 2024/25 budget, $125,000 was allocated to a proposed dog park in Cobram.
Just under half of this — $62,081 — will come from the Victorian Government’s Living Local Regional Grant Program, which council received in October 2022.
Residents are invited to have their say on the location of the proposed dog park.
