Greens Lake at Corop will be closed on New Year’s Eve for the eighth consecutive year.
Stanhope police and Goulburn-Murray Water are reminding people Greens Lake will close at 10am on Friday, December 30 and reopen at noon on Sunday, January 1.
People who are camping at Greens Lake before the closure must remove their camps and belongings before leaving the area.
Stanhope police Leading Senior Constable Frank Scopelliti said emergency services requested the closure due to safety concerns.
“There were a number of unsafe situations that occurred at the lake in the lead-up to the first closure in 2014,” Leading Sen Constable Scopelliti said.
“We continue to make this decision each year to ensure the safety of the community.
“This is about avoiding a life-threatening tragedy, as the actions of drug and alcohol-affected people can put the safety of themselves and others at risk.”
G-MW water delivery services general manager Warren Blyth said Greens Lake would be closed for 48 hours and recreational activity banned.
“We are again closing the lake for a short period around New Year’s Eve on this expert advice and in the interests of the wider community,” Mr Blyth said.
“It is our duty to close Greens Lake to avoid any tragedies occurring over the new year’s holiday period.”
