People with experience in business, legal, human resource management or accounting are being sought to fill a vacancy on the board of Shepparton FoodShare.

The charity has been rescuing and receiving donations of fresh and nutritious food and redistributing it to those in need since 2012.

It does this by partnering with supermarkets, business and other food rescue agencies across the state to provide nutritious food.

Apart from the human benefit FoodShare’s work brings, it also prevents around 300,000kg of food per year from going into landfill and waste.

It has more than 40 volunteers working a total of 150 hours each week to make this happen.

FoodShare says applicants for a place on the board should have one or more of the following qualities:

  • Proficient experience in business, legal, human resource management, or accounting;
  • Prior board service in the not-for-profit sector; and/or
  • Multicultural relations/leadership.

The vacancy has opened up with the departure of Leon Sargeant.

Board chair Jeremy Rensford said they were looking for a community-minded person with a variety of skills.

“It’s obviously someone with fairly good experience who has worked in the non-profit sector typically, but not essentially,” he said.

“Management experience, a person of that ilk.

“It’s a skills-based board, so essentially someone with HR skills, legal or both.”

Mr Rensford thanked Mr Sargeant for his service on the board.

Mr Sargeant has stepped away due to his commitments as general manager at Furphy’s and as the father of a young family.

“He’s actually sitting on our committee, a sub-committee of the board working on our new home for FoodShare, so he’s very much still involved,” he said.

FoodShare has secured funding for development of its new base in Mooroopna, which will help it deal with a constantly increasing demand on its services.

“The cost of living is, unfortunately, a massive challenge,” Mr Rensford said.

“The reality is, the current climate right here in Shepparton is one of great difficulty and increasing difficulty.

“Coming out of COVID and the floods, the demand on Shepparton FoodShare is only going to get greater.

“We’re so thankful to our wider community for their ongoing support and generous donations.

“We’re only as good as the community around us.”
