People from across the Goulburn Valley will come together to remember those they have lost at a community candlelight remembrance event.

The past three years have been particularly difficult for those who have had loved ones die, with many families unable to hold or attend funerals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Candles will be supplied for a gold coin donation at the event, which will be held at the Victoria Park Lake foreshore, just behind SAM.

GV Hospice is organising the gathering, and executive manager Wendy Ross said everyone was welcome to attend.

“This is an event for the whole community, not just those who have been connected with GV Hospice,” she said.

“The memorial will be flexible. Some people may wish to come for a short time, light a candle and leave, others may wish to stay for the hour to listen to live background music, enjoy the barbecue and feel supported by the wider community.”

She said she hoped people would come along to remember and celebrate their loved ones.

Community member Ian Bull will be the master of ceremonies.

“The opportunity for a family to formally and respectfully say their goodbyes, to give thanks and to celebrate a life lived, with the support of family and friends, is a very important part of the grieving and healing processes,” Mr Bull said.

“Sadly for many families in our community who have lost loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been denied that opportunity.

“This memorial event will hopefully provide a sense of comfort and re-assurance to those who are still hurting, in the knowledge that our community stands with them.”

The event will take place from 5pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday, May 24.
