Half a century of Mooroopna Lions

Life members: Lions district govenor Keith Yates recognises 50 years of service from charter members Bob McClure and John Kiss.

The Mooroopna Lions have celebrated their 50th anniversary, recognising half a century of service to the community.

Seventy people attended attended the dinner and ceremony at the Mooroopna Bowls Club, with visitors and representatives from Shepparton and Tatura Lions.

The Shepparton Lions was the charter club for the Mooroopna Lions, and sponsored them to start 50 years ago.

Having been there since the first meeting, it was a special day for charter member John Kiss.

But little did he know he was to be presented with a lifetime membership at the ceremony on Saturday, May 28.

Mr Kiss was a bit taken aback at the recognition, being left somewhat speechless, which was unusual for him as one of the more outspoken members of the club, Mooroopna Lions president Gary Thomas said.

He is the second charter member to be recognised with a life membership, following fellow charter member Bob McClure.

Not many charter members were still at their clubs after 50 years, so having one, let alone two was significant, Mr Thomas said.

City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe and Lions district governor Keith Yates presented awards to members of the service club for their contributions to the community.

One of the younger members, Josh Warren, was recognised with the district governor’s appreciation award.

Young fella: Josh Warren is recognised with the district governor’s appreciation award.

He may be only in his 30s, but Mr Warren has already served as Mooroopna Lions president twice, current president Mr Thomas said with pride.

Mr Thomas said the gathering gave current and past members a chance for a good catch-up, and rekindled friendships formed many years ago.
