Hay, check the temperature

High temperatures and humidity wreaked havoc across the Mid Murray Rural Fire Service area at the weekend, with multiple fires reported.

Two fires started in areas south of Mathoura, which district coordinator Gerard James said were linked to overheated hay stacks.

Another was a small grass fire north of Booroorban.

Mr James said damage from each was “minimal”, but did say they serve as a reminder for farmers to check the temperature of their hay stacks and keep an eye on areas of dry grass on days when the temperature is especially high.

He said by doing so, they can prevent the occurrence of such fires and avoid any potential damages or losses.
