International Women’s Day means many things to many people.

For Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Clare Looker, it means a chance to use her voice to address issues such as gender health gaps and disparities in women’s health.

At the University of Melbourne Department of Rural Health’s International Women’s Day event on Tuesday, March 5, Dr Looker will speak, reflecting on her professional journey as a matriarch in the health industry.

She plans to focus on women’s empowerment and public health, sharing her insights, experiences, and expertise in public health medicine.

Throughout her career, Dr Looker has been a strong leader and has provided vital scientific advice and guidance, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the event, she will discuss her career journey, starting from medical school, including her graduation from the University of Melbourne’s Rural Clinical School in 2005.

Dr Looker will also cover the challenges and triumphs she has faced along the way, emphasising the evolving role of the Chief Health Officer amid the pandemic and other public health concerns.

She is passionate about encouraging women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) and is aware of the key challenges that women face in these fields.

She will also share her own experiences of how other women have influenced her career journey.

The event will be held online and in person at the University of Melbourne’s Department of Rural Health, 49 Graham St, Shepparton, on Tuesday, March 5, at 5.30pm.
