The Benalla Heritage Group (BHG) is looking forward to being a part of the 2023 National Heritage Festival.

The nationwide event will be held from Wednesday, May 3, to Saturday, May 7, and builds on the success of the previous two festivals.

As an initiative of the Benalla Family Research Group BHG is keen to involve community members in its festival program, which includes:

  • A five-day calendar;
  • A series of family friendly events; and
  • An evening and weekend program.

For more than 40 years the National Trust has connected the nation through Australian Heritage Festival celebrations.

From the city to the regions across Australia, it’s an opportunity for the community to immerse themselves in Australia’s rich and diverse heritage, offering unmatched access to special exhibitions, tours, talks, workshops, food fairs, ceremonies, demonstrations, dinners and more.

In 2023, the festival returns with the theme “Shared Stories”.

The theme invites event organisers to reveal Australia’s layered history by sharing stories of our natural, cultural, built and Indigenous heritage; and encourages the community to build deeper connections by sharing their own rich and diverse stories along the way.

BFRG secretery Jane Rushworth said the Benalla Heritage Group, formally known as the Benalla History, Archivist and Research Group, is a collective of 25 organisations within Benalla Rural City who share a common interest in collecting, preserving and sharing Benalla’s history.

“We are cordially inviting other organisations keen to share their heritage and stories to contribute an event either independently or as part of our local heritage enthusiasts collective,” Ms Rushworth said.

“Planning is progressing well and we should be able to give the community a ‘sneak peek’ at some of the highlights of the program soon.”

Organisations can contact BFRG via events@benallafamilyresearchgroup.org or by phoning Ms Rushworth on 0437 621 575 or Ms Sabine Smyth on 0439 001 918 for further details.
