Those venturing down Hanger Lane recently might have noticed one of the former migrant camp’s BARC huts covered by a tarp.

A concerned resident contacted the Ensign anonymously to voice concerns over alterations to the structure.

However, Benalla Rural City Council has confirmed that work is being undertaken with the building’s significant heritage in mind.

“Heritage conservation works are currently under way on one of the BARC huts, located at the Benalla Aerodrome,” A BRCC spokesperson said.

“An asbestos audit report identified the asbestos roof as a hazard.

“All asbestos has been safely removed from the facility and disposed of by a licensed asbestos removal company.

“The roof will be replaced with a galvanized iron roof in accordance with heritage requirements.”
