Get excited, garden lovers. Horticulturalist Sophie Thomson is coming to town to share her tips and tricks on having the best garden in the street.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s flood recovery team, Resilience in Recovery, has organised two free events with Ms Thomson to share her expertise with the community.

Ms Thomson is an Australian horticulturist, author, television and radio personality from Adelaide, and is a presenter on ABC’s Gardening Australia and an ABC radio talk-back host.

The first event, ‘Roots of Recovery’, will see Ms Thomson discuss the health benefits of gardening, provide step-by-step guidance on restoring your garden after flood damage and offer tips on growing your own food, no matter the size of your garden.

The first event is at St Paul’s African House in Shepparton on Sunday, June 23, from 9.15am to 4pm.

For this event, a courtesy bus will run from Bunbartha and Murchison, and residents can register for a spot on it.

The second event, ‘Growing our Gardens’, will see Ms Thomson share her experience of the power of gardening for wellbeing, the benefits of growing your own food at home or in a shared garden and practical tips to help you succeed.

The second event is in Murchison and has two sessions: starting at the Murchison Community Garden at 9am and moving to Murchison Primary School from 10:30am to 12:30pm on Monday, June 24.

Members of the Murchison Community Garden will provide free bacon and egg rolls, and a free lunch will be on offer at the school. Ms Thomson will deliver a presentation on connecting the community to shared projects.

The Australian and Victorian governments funded these activities in response to the October 2022 flood event, which impacted communities in Greater Shepparton.
