Benalla Rural City Council is seeking community input around the proposed installation of a sculpture dedicated to Benalla’s Australian Aviation Hall of Fame inductee, Arthur Baird.

Mr Baird was born, raised and schooled in the Rose City.

A council spokesperson said the impressive proposed sculpture was based on a de Havilland DH-50 aircraft and was more than five metres high.

“The work is carefully balanced just above its centre of gravity, with a horizontal and vertical freedom of movement to move freely in the wind,” the spokesperson said.

“The proposed location for the sculpture ... is outside the Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Learning Centre.

“(It is) designed to be seen flying amongst the gum trees while driving down Nunn St.”

The project is funded by the Victorian Government through the Building Better Works Package.
