More than 10 per cent of Campaspe Shire’s older population experiences loneliness at any one time and more are at risk of social isolation or loneliness and would greatly benefit from regular visits.

If you know someone or are experiencing this, Intereach is encouraging people to attend an information session about the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme.

The ACVVS is a free service that aims to combat loneliness and isolation among older people by providing companionship through volunteer visits.

An information session will be held at Rochester Community House, Mackay St, on Friday April 12, from 1 pm to 2 pm.

It will provide insights into the purpose of ACVVS, eligibility criteria, referral process, and opportunities for volunteering within Intereach.

Intereach is one of 140 community organisations across the country funded by the Australian Government to deliver this special and important service.

Intereach volunteer team leader Susan Devereaux urges people experiencing any kind of loneliness to reach out and attend one of the information sessions.

“There are a range of reasons people can feel isolated; isolated from culture and heritage; little contact with friends or relatives; mobility challenges; or being different in some way,” she said.

“Regular visits from volunteers can help to improve the quality of life for those most vulnerable in our communities.

“By offering friendship and companionship, volunteers contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of life for these people.

“Anyone can refer an older person who meets the eligibility criteria to the scheme, with the older person’s consent. We encourage self-referrals, as well as referrals from family, friends and support services or professionals.”

The sessions will include informative presentations followed by a Q&A to address any queries.
