Connecting communities: Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple in Shepparton.

The Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District cultural bus tour has been a successful initiative since its inception in 2011.

Organised to foster understanding and appreciation of Shepparton’s rich multicultural fabric, the tour has engaged more than 1000 participants over the years.

“What this bus tour does is it gives an opportunity for new communities to showcase their culture and faith with the wider community,” Ethnic Council manager Sam Atukorala said.

“It’s an opportunity for people to integrate with each other and share their culture, and welcome new and emerging communities to Greater Shepparton.

“The most important thing is at Rumbalara. We have the opportunity to learn about the world’s oldest living culture, Australian Aboriginals.”

Participants in the tour will have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Shepparton’s multicultural communities and Australia’s Indigenous culture by visiting Rumbalara, the Turkish Mosque, the Afghan Mosque, the Iraqi Mosque and the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple.

The tour will start at the Ethnic Council at 8.30am and conclude about 3.45pm.

A complimentary lunch will be provided at the Afghan Mosque, offering a taste of authentic cuisine and further cultural immersion.

For many previous attendees, the tour marked their first meaningful interaction with members of these communities.

This interaction is not only educational but also instrumental in promoting social cohesion and mutual respect.

“It’s great to connect the communities, and lots of people come with questions,” Mr Atukorala said.

The tour also serves as a bridge, breaking down cultural barriers and helping build an inclusive and understanding community in Shepparton.

This event is free of charge, but due to limited availability, booking is essential. So don’t miss out!
