There are plenty of reasons to offer your time as a volunteer, with many organisations across the Rose city needing help.

One which offers as much to the volunteers as those they assist is Benalla Health.

Kate Thomas has been volunteering with Benalla Health for the past six years and loves every moment.

“I became a volunteer when I first arrived in Benalla,” Ms Thomas said.

“Not knowing anyone I phoned Benalla Health to discuss the possibility of volunteering.

Ms Thomas was warmly welcomed and began volunteering with day activities one day a week.

“I soon became part of a supportive community, not only was I helping others, but those I helped in turn helped me find my feet,” she said.

“As my confidence grew I then decided to refresh my skills as a palliative care volunteer, something I had done many years beforehand.

“I was helped and encouraged to do this through Benalla Health.”

Ms Thomas said there were a number of reasons she found the position rewarding.

“I enjoy the feeling of being part of the broader community,” she said.

“And also the camaraderie with other volunteers, some of whom I have made lasting friendships with.

“If you are considering becoming a volunteer don’t be daunted by that first step, believe me, you will be welcomed and supported all the way.

“We all look for that warm smile, reassurance and gentle hand, and what better way to offer this to others than by becoming a volunteer.

“Would I recommend becoming a volunteer? Yes, 100 per cent.“
