Kids win truckload of compost

Berrigan Public School has won itself a truckload of premium compost after taking part in a simple colouring competition.

The Year 1 and 2 students entered the competition, launched as part of the Halve Waste community education program about the three-bin system.

Biomix Premium Composts, in collaboration with Berrigan Shire Council and Halve Waste, donated a truckload of premium compost as a prize for the school.

Biomix is the company which takes organic waste from Berrigan Shire and other communities, and turns it into compost for the community.

Berrigan Public School principal Dorothy Dore said compost as a prize was initially a bit strange to the students.

But now they can see the true benefits.

“The delivery arrived last Wednesday, and it was well received, even though the kids were a bit unsure about the compost,” she said.

“Later in the day, the kids also received certificates, and they got quite excited about that.

“It was a truckload of very rich organic material.

“It showed the beauty of the (three-bin) system when it is working correctly and proved the cycle of reuse, reduce, recycle, completing that full cycle.

“It was our community’s (Berrigan’s) green waste and shows in the end possible benefits and good outcomes of the system working.”

Ms Dore said the compost would be put to good use at the school.

“It has been and will continue to be used to updress all our lawns and garden spaces, which we have a lot of,” she said.

“Some has also gone to our vegetable garden and through our garden assistant and a bit of water, it will all be used up on our school gardens very quickly.

“It has been a really worthwhile exercise and has shown our students the full cycle in practice.”
