Kyabram District League officials have launched an investigation into an incident that occurred moments after the final siren of the senior football grand final on Saturday.
A brawl involving players and spectators began when spectators ran into the middle of Mooroopna Recreation Reserve after the grand final.
The melee lasted for several minutes and flared up several times, despite the best attempts of members of both clubs to pull people apart.
It’s still unclear exactly how the brawl started.
Police arrived on the scene about 30 minutes after the fracas.
On Sunday, the KDL confirmed it had launched an investigation into the incident.
“The actions of some involved in the incident are extremely disappointing and dangerous and not reflective of the inclusive environment which the KDL has fostered,” the statement read.
“The KDL executive are taking this matter seriously and will be seeking the co-operation of the clubs to identify those involved in these incidents.
“We will take actions necessary to ensure the integrity of the KDL including standards and behaviour are maintained for all involved within the KDL.”
The league said it “strongly condemns violence” both on and off the field, and the league would be making no further comment.
A spokesperson for Victoria Police said no injuries or formal assaults were reported to police.
They said police arrived on scene about 5pm as crowds separated.
Lancaster won the hard-fought game in torrid conditions by 10 points, but celebrations were delayed.
KDL president Fraser Kerrins, speaking to the crowd following presentations of premiership medals, called the brawl “disgraceful”.
“It was unbefitting of the competition we represent in the Kyabram District League,” he said.
“Everyone needs to take a good hard look at themselves before they return in 2023.”
