Avenel Football Netball Club held a ladies day to celebrate the women of the club on Saturday, May 20.

The day acknowledged the contribution of women in the club not just for cheering on the sidelines, but all the work they do behind the scenes, providing lifts, washing uniforms, helping umpire, manning the gates and assisting in the canteen.

Braving the weather, the women sheltered under marquees and enjoyed the food and drink while watching the footy.

Raffle prizes were won, and two silent auctions took place, one for a magnum bottle from Fowles Winery and the other an original painting by local artist Jenny Kelly.

Organiser Terry White said despite being a smaller gathering than previous years due to the weather, it was still a lovely day.

“We used to be on the committees, all four of us girls that set up the day, and now we do this. It’s fun to do something that's different, it’s our contribution to the club,” Ms White said.

“It’s about supporting the women right across the club. The mums that do night shift and get the kids ready ... no-one just gets to the game, it’s all those little jobs that you do before you even get there. We want to acknowledge the women who support sport.

“Every year we have different groups of women come along. It’s a day just to get together and enjoy a day off.

“We were pleased that it didn’t rain at all, it was quite beautiful.”

Ms White thanked Beer Auto Group and Fowles Winery for their sponsorship on the day.
