New lighting on all shared paths at Victoria Park Lake will not only improve visibility but community safety.
At the May meeting Greater Shepparton City Council awarded a $771,617 contract to Byers Electrical to install 64 new light poles and upgrade underground equipment at the lake.
Cr Shane Sali moved the motion to award the contract and get the works rolling.
“This is obviously a really big investment in the upgrade of pedestrian lighting around Victoria Park Lake,” he said.
Cr Sali was positively glowing about the lake and its importance to the city.
“The lake gives Shepparton the best entrance to any regional city I have ever see and this lighting will continue to enhance that space, which is important,” he said.
Cr Sam Spinks said the lighting would increase safety for users.
“Many members of the public use that space and we want to be able to ensure they can do that safely and comfortably, this will add that element to it,” she said.
Cr Sali and Cr Anthony Brophy also welcomed the awarding of the large contract to a local company.
“It just means more people are employed locally, they stay here, their kids go to school, it is great for our economy in that sense,” Cr Brophy said.
The motion was carried unopposed.
At the same meeting, another contract to upgrade the supply of power for events at the lake was noted. Watters Electrical will complete the works, which will cost $144,936.
The 64 light poles will replace the older style lighting currently in place, which has reached the end of its asset life. The modern lighting will provide more efficient and brighter lighting.
