Sutton’s Bakery has won six medals, including a gold for its dim sim roll, at the 35th Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Sutton’s Bakery, celebrating its 160th anniversary this year, submitted multiple products to the 35th Official Great Aussie Pie Competition, which is part of the Fine Food Australia event at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event ran from Monday, September 2 to Thursday, September 5.

Sutton’s Bakery medalled six times in three categories: gourmet pie, gourmet sausage roll and plain pie.

They won four bronze medals for their slow-cooked lamb and vegetable pie, chunky steak and mushroom pie, massaman beef curry pie and mince plain pie.

They won silver for their spinach and fetta roll and a gold medal for their dim sim roll.

The dim sim roll was created by pastry chef Simon Sykes, who has been working with Sutton’s Bakery for a year.

With a flair for creativity, Sykes wanted to create something unique for the bakery without changing the generational recipes of their classic products.

Sutton’s Bakery manager Kathy Sperling praised Mr Sykes for his work on their pastries over the past year, and because of the high quality, she knew that they had to put them up for competition.

“Normally, we have a rotating cast of pastry chefs; different people do it on different days, but over the last year, it has just been Simon Sykes,” she said.

“He has been perfecting and working on our pastry; it’s never been better to the point where we knew we had to enter them in the competition.

“We are so stoked that it (the dim sim roll) won the gold because it’s a little bit creative and something we are proud of.

“It was a real honour to put Simon’s products up against the best of the best because I knew they’d do well because they’re so delicious.”
