Local brigades prepare for busy season

RFS and VRA members getting prepared for demonstrations.

In preparation for the coming fire season, 30 volunteers from four local Rural Fire Service brigades attended the annual training day at Mayrung on Sunday.

The training has been set up as an annual refresher for local volunteers.

The full day of training ensures the volunteers are up-skilled and prepared for the upcoming fire season.

Focuses of the day’s training were fire truck familiarisation, convoy firefighting, proper use of foam and emergency overrun drills.

Brigades involved included Tuppal, Myrtle Park, Mayrung and Birganbidgil.

Also in attendance were Deniliquin Rescue Squad - VRA Rescue NSW members who put on demonstrations for the brigades and volunteers in attendance, including on the use of equipment and procedure.

One component of the VRA training that was particularly well received was the discussions regarding the cooperation and assistance of RFS when approaching emergencies, such as motor vehicle and farm accidents.

This training is timed to be held before the opening of the Bush Fire Danger Period, which in Mid Murray will be October 1 this year.

The day was coordinated by Mid Murray RFS operational officer Col Munro, group officer Keith McAllister and the Mayrung RFS brigade.
