A top-priced Poll Dorset ram has joined a long list of rams purchased over the years by one Thoona stud now entering its sixth decade.

Sammon Brothers “Majella” Poll Dorset Stud purchased the ram for $6250 at the Kurralea Annual Ram Sale in NSW on Tuesday, September 24.

Principal Bill Sammon said he liked the ram as soon as he saw him and that it was the ninth ram his stud had bought from Kurralea.

“He was very good structurally and sound on his feet,” Mr Sammon said.

“The ram has very good eye muscle figures, which fits in with our policy to put more meat into our rams.

“By doing this our ... clients will get better yield out of their lambs.”

Mr Sammon said the rams had ‘very clean’ faces.

“Which is very important, especially if you join to Merino ewes.”

Sammon Brothers also ran its own annual flock ram sale on Friday, September 20.

It was the stud’s 40th annual sale.

“We had a very pleasing result with 103 out of 104 rams sold at auction,” Mr Sammon said.

“Another eight rams were sold through the ring without figures.”

The top price at the sale was $3100 at an average for the day of $1550, with many rams selling from $1000 to $1200.

“(This) gave every buyer a chance to fill their requirements.”

Mr Sammon said he was very pleased with the result, with many former and new clients making purchases.

The stud has another 80 rams to sell on property this year.
