From eye-catchers to head-scratchers, Shepparton Art Museum welcomes artwork of all kinds for their upcoming exhibition, SAM Open 2024.

SAM Open is an annual public exhibition for creatives aged 26 years and over who live, work or study in the Goulburn Valley or Hume regions.

Individuals with any level of experience can submit an artwork, with the selected few to occupy the walls of the Hugh D. T. Williamson Community Gallery at SAM.

Responding to the exhibition’s theme, ‘Remnants, memories and objects’, artists are invited to create pieces that explore items or moments that make up their stories.

SAM curator of community Caroline Esbenshade said the theme could be interpreted literally or abstractly – it’s the artist’s choice.

“It presents an opportunity for creatives to share formative memories, treasured objects, and personal narratives through whatever medium they choose,” she said.

Artists can use their skills to immortalise, reinterpret or construct a new keepsake.

Alternatively, they can imagine what might remain of them in the future.

SAM is accepting a kaleidoscope of art forms, including painting, photography, sculpture and poetry.

Submissions can be new or existing work created within the past two years.

Ms Esbenshade said SAM Open was always met with enthusiasm from the community, and the museum expected this year to be no exception.

“I look forward to learning more about the artists in our community through their art, and I anticipate that audiences will resonate deeply with the personal nature of these works,” she said.

Applications for SAM Open 2024 are now open and will close on Monday, June 17.
