From spores to splendours.

Olivia Trenorden, SAM’s public program co-ordinator, animated on Wednesday, January 10, a captivating “Making Mushrooms” workshop that left participants enchanted and brimming with creativity.

Olivia’s interactive delivery brought the workshop to life, seamlessly blending fascinating facts about the existing 10,000 different types of fungi (we know of) with an infectious enthusiasm that had the kids eagerly anticipating the activities ahead.

The workshop ethos radiated inclusivity, imparting valuable lessons like “to be kind” and “share with others,” all while emphasising the universal accessibility of art with the mantra that “art is for everyone”.

Inspired by the enchanting fungi showcased in Beci Orpin’s mesmerising exhibition, MUSH/ROOM, currently held at SAM’s kids’ gallery, children were encouraged to channel their inner artists and craft their own mushrooms using upcycled household materials.

As the young participants delved into the world of mushrooms, they unleashed their creativity using materials such as cardboard, felt, pompoms, and an array of vibrant colours to bring their unique masterpieces to life.

Imaginations ran wild for a blissful 90 minutes, culminating in one-of-a-kind creations to proudly take home.

This workshop is a glimpse into SAM’s vibrant summer workshop series, catering to all age groups, from the little ones to adults. Most of these free workshops provide an excellent opportunity to explore new realms and a delightful way to entertain the kids during their summer break.

Uncover the diverse sessions available by visiting SAM’s website, and due to limited spots, early registration is recommended.
