Man arrested following Flowerdale grass fire

A man was arrested over a grass fire in Flowerdale last week, on Wednesday, February 22.

The Flowerdale man, 71, was arrested and interviewed by the Alexandra Crime Investigation Unit with the assistance of the Arson Squad and CFA investigators.

The fire is believed to have started in the Spring Valley Rd area in Flowerdale on Tuesday, February 21, and spread into bushland.

More than 50 CFA units responded to the incident, along with assistance from Forest Fire Management Victoria crews.

The fire was in steep and inaccessible country and spread into forested areas to the north.

The burnt area spanned approximately 1000 hectares with a perimeter of 22 kilometres.

The fire was contained as of Monday, February 27 with a ‘Stay Informed’ warning in place for Flowerdale, Strath Creek, Yea and Break O’Day.

The man was released pending further inquiries and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police and CFA remain on scene and are working to keep the fire under control.
