A team of six students from Mathoura Public School competed in the Riverine PSSA Cross Country event at Gundagai on June 16.

In a statement, the school said conditions on the day were nearly freezing and rainy.

“The squad of runners representing Deniliquin and District displayed determination and talent and achieved truly impressive results, including four podium finishes,” it said.

Sister duo Matilda (11 Year Old Girls) and Sophie Eddy (8 and 9 Year Old Girls) both finished in first place with Age Group Champion awards.

Khoa Unwin (8 and 9 Year Old Girls) finished in second place, and Katelyn Eddy (10 Year Old Girls) secured third placing.

All four girls have now qualified to compete in the NSW PSSA Cross Country Championships to be held in Sydney on July 22.

“Teammates Leah Ellis and Georgie Taylor also ran excellent races, with Leah placing 22nd and Georgie 12th in her event,” the school said.

“Mathoura Public School wishes Sophie, Khoa, Katelyn and Matilda all the very best as they experience competing in their first state event.

“We know that the girls will continue to excel and make the small town of Mathoura proud.”
