After vigorous planning and a few weeks of painting, Mooroopna’s newest mural is officially done.
To mark its completion, the community celebrated by gathering around the freshly painted wall on Morrell St and cutting the red ribbon on Monday, November 13.
The mural was commissioned by the Mooroopna Education and Activities Centre and funded by the Greater Shepparton City Council’s Empowering Communities Project Grant.
The purpose of the project was to give the initially graffitied brick wall a bit of colour and to cultivate youth participation via the Lighthouse Project’s OLLY initiative.
With the help of local artist Tank and project manager Rachael McAlister, OLLY participants brainstormed ideas on what Mooroopna means to them.
The design concept was then outlined onto the wall by Tank, while OLLY participants and other community members painted in the rest.
Jasmin Priya Reddy was one of the OLLY participants who got involved in the art project.
Already a budding artist, Jasmin is quite used to the brush and can often be found experimenting with acrylic paints, so it seemed fitting that working on this art project came naturally to her.
“I found it very soothing and calming,” she said.
“Just being here was really fun because, besides the painting, we were also able to talk and get to know each other better.”
Jasmin said the project gave her a sense of accomplishment, knowing it was something she could always look back on.
“It’s always good to be like, I did that and show off to my friends as another thing other than going down the street,” she said.
“Tank did an amazing job with the outline and the design, and he was a really good person to show us what to do.”
