Meals on Wheels has long been in the driver’s seat for delivering both connection and tasty meals to Australians who need it most.

On August 28, Australia celebrates Meals on Wheels Day, recognising 71 years’ worth of time that volunteers have provided in servicing community members and making a difference in their day-to-day lives.

The organisation proudly operates over 590 community services nationwide, with an army of volunteers ensuring nutritious meals reach those unable to cater for themselves.

More than 60 seniors across Echuca, Kyabram, Corowa and Howlong receive the service through Intereach’s Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Kyabram residents James Studd and Judy Anderson receive meals and believe the service delivers more than just food.

“I can’t cook so it’s important to keep me going. And it’s nice to get a visit from all the smiling ladies who come around,” Mr Studd said.

“At 82 my age, I can’t stand to cook at the stove any more because of my back, so I get all the help I could possibly have to stay at home,” Mrs Anderson said.

“Meals on Wheels is very important to people like me who can’t do what they used to do.”

In the past year, the Intereach Meals on Wheels volunteers travelled a collective 18,605km and volunteered more than 1480 hours to deliver 13,642 meals.

Kyabram’s dedicated volunteers covered an astounding 6750km — equivalent to a round trip from Kyabram to Cairns — showcasing their extraordinary commitment.

Intereach workforce team leader Sue Devereaux said older people depended on the service to stay independent and at home, and that volunteers were the key to ensuring that happened.

“They not only provide an important quality-of-life service, but they make friendships along the way,” Ms Devereaux said.

“Our volunteers get a real sense of fulfilment out of what they do and the impact they can make in someone’s life.”

Intereach co-chief executive Michelle Tai said the volunteers were the “heart of our communities”.

“They don’t just deliver meals. They bring connection, care and a sense of belonging to those who need it most,” Mrs Tai said.

“Their dedication contributes directly to our vision of ‘strong, connected communities’ where everyone feels valued and supported.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our Meals on Wheels volunteers for their remarkable dedication and empowering older Australians to live the life they choose.”
