A free brekkie, sponsored by MEGT, was available for all Rochester residents last Friday morning.

The free early morning meal was part of an effort to get residents to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the town for the past two years.

Former district governor Hedley Moon led the way for fellow Lions members and was happy with the turnout.

“It’s a great morning and another occasion where we can come out and support the town of Rochester and get a free meal, too,” Mr Moon said.

State manager Blake Wallace was there to ensure his staff made the breakfast successful.

“MEGT knows that the town of Rochester has done it tough over the past few years and we thought we would put our heads together and see if we can help out the town,” Mr Wallace said.

“The town of Rochester has a lot of employers and apprentices and we thought that a free breakfast, as well as a free raffle, would be an opportunity to bring people together.”

By 8.15am, 50 people had come along, with the morning attracting more than 120 people, who had a few sausages and a chat before heading off to school or work.

Mr Wallace was also happy with the support from community-led organisations.

“We are also grateful to the help from local Lions members who arrived early this morning and worked to help this event succeed,” Mr Wallace said.

Perennial Rochester fixture and former Lions president Bryan Griffiths was also there with local identity Leigh Wilson, discussing the challenges still facing the town.

“This free breakfast that is on is a great opportunity for the town,” Mr Griffiths said.

“It will allow businesses, residents and employees to come together and chat about the different opportunities on offer.”

Mr Griffiths looks forward to more of these happening over the next few months as when ‘impromptu’ events happen, it tends to bring the best out of people.

“Such events like these bring the community together. We get to have an informal chat and share ideas,” Mr Griffiths said.
