She’s renowned for her eye-popping, playful art that has graced projects for Disney Australia, Samsung, and Slurpee.

But now, multidisciplinary artist Mimi Leung is bringing her talent to Benalla.

The Shepparton-based creative is celebrating her new solo exhibition, Growing Up With You, with an opening event on Friday, July 5, at the Benalla Art Gallery.

Her signature style makes one feel as though they’ve been plunked in the middle of the rainbow, but underneath, the colour spectrum holds a deeper meaning.

Growing Up With You provides an intimate look into the artist’s journey, reflecting on her growth as both an artist and an individual.

It delves into the intricate dance between Ms Leung’s artistic practice and her role as a mother, illustrating how these facets of her life inform and shape each other.

“Art and drawing have always been central to who I am – my earliest memories are of drawing, sketching and painting,” she said.

“Becoming a mother really challenged my time, energy and brain capacity.

“Instead of resisting these changes as I initially did, I began to accept and welcome them into my practice and allowed them to influence the meaning I find in making art.”

The exhibit will showcase works from the artist’s archives as well as her more recent endeavours.

Themes cover trauma, healing, and the joys and complexities of parent-child relationships in multicultural families, highlighted by an animated poem projection on intergenerational trauma.

Central to the exhibition is a digital illustration vinyl installation.

It invites viewers to not only behold the 7m by 3m canvas, but to become part of the exhibition itself.

“Children and adults are invited to colour and doodle, complete patterns, etc., on this work, to collaborate on an artwork that grows unpredictably throughout the exhibition but is anchored by a central image,” Ms Leung said.
