Minister visits Pyalong’s new netball courts

Unveiling: Victorian Community Sport Minister Ros Spence with Mitchell Shire councillors and community members at Pyalong Recreation Reserve.

Victorian Community Sport Minister Ros Spence was in Pyalong on Thursday, May 11.

She visited Pyalong Recreation Reserve to see the $750,000 netball/tennis court and lighting upgrade that has replaced the old hard-court area and includes new fencing.

The new enclosure has two shared-use netball/tennis courts lit to competition standards and a hard-court warm-up and active recreation area, including a half-court basketball/netball court.

A $500,000 grant from the Female Friendly Facilities Stream of the Victorian Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund was complemented by a $250,000 investment from Mitchell Shire Council.

During the visit, Ms Spence also announced partial funding of an $850,000 revamp for RB Robson Stadium in Wallan.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Fiona Stevens said that in recent years council had made a substantial commitment to improving sport and recreation opportunities for women and girls.

“It’s imperative that everyone in our community has equal access to high-quality and safe facilities,” Cr Stevens said.

“This project in Pyalong is specifically targeted at maintaining and increasing the involvement of women and girls in sports that currently have a higher percentage of female participation, like netball and tennis.

“We’re very grateful for the support of the Victorian Government to partner with council to help deliver these upgrades.”

Cr Stevens thanked the volunteers who contributed to the success of these opportunities.
