Interim Administrator John Tanner AM has begun his role as the Independent Administrator of Moira Shire Council.
His appointment follows the Commission of Inquiry Report and subsequent decision by the Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne to dismiss the council.
Mr Tanner, a former businessman from Benalla, brings extensive experience in local government, small business and regional development to the role.
He has a strong focus on community engagement, management, governance and strategic planning. He has served also as a board member for several regional organisations and was Administrator for Brimbank City Council.
“I look forward to working with Moira Shire and its staff in addressing the recommendations of the commission,” Mr Tanner said.
“My focus is on ensuring council services are delivered effectively and that the health and wellbeing of staff is prioritised.
“I’m also committed to strengthening the engagement and relationships between the community and the council.
“As part of this the shire council meeting will go ahead as planned next Wednesday, March 22.”
Inline with his role as independent administrator, Mr. Tanner will act as the council.
The council meeting will start at 4.30pm and will be available on live stream, as well as open to the public.
Throughout his term with the council for the next three months, Mr Tanner emphasised he would be working to ensure a smooth transition process for the council in readiness for a permanent panel of administrators.
“We will keep the community informed about any changes, or developments that may occur during this transition period,” he added.
Acting Moira Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Josh Lewis welcomed Mr Tanner to the council and community.
“John has extensive experience in local government and is a country person with a strong background in the rural sector and business,” Mr Lewis said.
“We’re very glad to have him on board. We look forward to working with him and the community.”
