The Moira Shire Council will mark the first anniversary of the October 2022 floods with a special commemorative event in Nathalia.
The event will be held on Wednesday, November 8, at the Nathalia Recreation Reserve from 4pm to 7.30pm.
The council, alongside the community, will be commemorating this journey, recognising the challenges the community has faced, paying tribute to those affected, acknowledging the strength of the community and looking forward to the future with hope and determination.
The event will include a free barbecue dinner and family-friendly activities such as a jumping castle and face painting.
A special art exhibition will be presented on the day featuring works from Nathalia Primary School, G.R.A.I.N Store and local artist Phillippa Schapper.
Dr Rob Gordon, a renowned disaster trauma specialist, will be a special guest at the event. He will deliver an address on the themes of resilience and healing in the face of adversity.
Moira Shire Council administrator Suzanna Sheed said the event would allow members of the community to come together to not only reflect on the event but also find the strength and resources to continue moving forward.
“Now 12 months on, the flood recovery continues and not just in a physical sense, the impacts of the flood are long-lasting, affecting our physical infrastructure, economic, social and health and wellbeing of our communities,” Ms Sheed said.
“Our residents are very resilient, and this is a moment to come together to continue to support one another, share stories, connect resources and help each other on this path of healing.”
Residents will also be able to get into contact and talk with emergency and flood recovery agencies personnel who will also be at the event.
