Moira Shire Council has installed a temporary warning sign for motorists at the intersection of Labuan Rd and Murray Valley Hwy near Strathmerton after a horror car crash that killed five people last week.

Moira Shire Council administrator John Tanner and acting chief executive Joshua Lewis said council hoped that the temporary warning signs would lead to greater safety at the intersection

“Council is working with the Department of Transport and Planning and the police to install more permanent warning measures,” Mr Lewis said.

“We will do whatever we can to make our roads as safe as possible.”

There have been 100 deaths on Victorian roads so far this year, with 59 in rural Victoria, a 26 per cent increase on the same period last year (47) on rural roads.

Mr Tanner has called the statistics a tragedy.

“There are sadly just too many people losing their lives on rural roads,” Mr Tanner said.

“We want all motorists to enjoy their time in the shire and not be faced with the trauma of unnecessary accidents.

“The tragic fatalities of last week are an acute warning to all motorists to drive with care and observe all the road regulations.”

Moira Shire Council is offering counselling services to all families affected by last week’s fatal collision.
