Mosaic paver workshop to teach ancient art form

Cobram’s Arts for All group is giving residents the chance to learn an ancient but enduring art form.

It's a type of artwork which can last for centuries and Cobram residents have a chance to create their own.

Arts for All is hosting a mosaic paver workshop on Sunday, June 23, from 10am to 2pm, and has invited everyone interested to join.

The classes will be run by artist Sharon Evans, who has 15 years of experience making mosaics, and will be composed of learning the techniques to make a masterpiece.

Mosaic artwork, practised for centuries, boasts famous pieces from ancient Rome, Greece, and Mesopotamia.

Despite its ancient origins, mosaic creation thrives in the 21st century.

Earlier this year Moira Shire Council, with Arts for All, decided on a plan to install mosaic panels around Thompsons Beach in Cobram.

These panels, currently being created, celebrate the natural beauty of Cobram and the Murray River, depicting native birds, fish, and plants.

Arts For All president June Wood said the council's plan has renewed interest in mosaics, and the June workshop responds to enthusiastic feedback.

“I think because we are doing the mosaic art trail which is down at Thompsons Beach people are interested in and getting educated in the techniques used to create mosaics,” she said.

Ms Wood also puts the popularity of mosaic down to the therapeutic nature of the craft.

“Mosaic work is relaxing to do and calming,” she said.

“It's also a great way to meet other people and have fun.”

The June event is open to anyone 16-years-old or older and will include morning tea.

Held at the old St Joseph’s Hall, attendees can take their completed creations home.

Ms Wood encourages anyone interested to not hesitate and join the workshop.

“Come along and giving it a go,” she said.
