A motorbike rider was allegedly travelling at 163km/h in a 100km/h zone when stopped by police on a rural road near Yarroweyah.

Cobram Highway Patrol Police pulled the rider over on the Benalla-Tocumwal Rd on Saturday, May 20.

Cobram police Sergeant William Dockrey said the 50-year-old Finley man had only had the motorbike for three weeks.

It was impounded and the man was charged with excessive speeding. He will appear in court at a later date.

The incident happened in the vicinity of a fatal crash where a car and a truck collided on Thursday, May 4, and not far from a horrific crash on April 20 where five people died in a crash between a car, a ute and a truck on the corner of Labuan Rd and the Murray Valley Hwy.
