A motorcyclist is in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after colliding with safety barriers while attempting to overtake a truck on the Midland Hwy near Cosgrove South on Saturday, August 5.

Shepparton police Sergeant Darren Wagstaff said the 45-year-old Howlong man, who was heading east, rolled about 100m after being flung from his bike due to the impact about 2.25pm.

The truck driver and other motorcyclists stopped to help the man before paramedics arrived.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said the man was flown to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition with upper and lower body injuries.

Sgt Wagstaff said on Sunday the man had been put in an induced coma.

On Monday, a Royal Melbourne Hospital spokesperson confirmed he remained in a critical condition.
