State Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed has promised to ensure the Labor Party follows through on its $55 million commitment to the Numurkah Pioneers Memorial Lodge aged care home if both are re-elected at the Victorian election.
Ms Sheed has welcomed the Labor promise to spend up to $55 million redeveloping the facility if it retains power in November.
“If I retain the seat of Shepparton District as the community’s independent voice in the upcoming Victorian election, and the Labor Party is re-elected, I will hold them to account to make sure this funding promise is followed through,” Ms Sheed said.
Ms Sheed had previously raised the need for the funding in Victorian Parliament.
In that speech, she also called on Disability, Ageing and Carers Minister Colin Brooks to visit the facility and see the work that needed to be done.
“I believe the minister will be visiting the centre and will see for himself that Numurkah Pioneers Memorial Lodge is no longer fit for purpose,” Ms Sheed said.
“The Numurkah community played a key role in highlighting the need for funding for the facility and many residents spoke to my office and emailed me about their concerns.
“It was built in 1976 and used as a hostel, but over time it transitioned to a residential aged care home catering for 32 residents, two respite residents and two people in transition care beds.
“The building was never designed as a residential aged care home, and needs a large investment to make it comfortable and functional for residents.”
