Todd Murphy ended a remarkable first day as an Australian cricketer with his first Test wicket.

The Moama cricket export produced a fine delivery to have Indian opener K L Rahul caught and bowled for 20.

It was the only joy for Australia as India reached 1-77 at stumps on day one at Nagpur in reply to the visitors’ total of 177.

Murphy certainly showed no signs of nerves with the ball, bowling with great control.

He finished day one with the figures of 1-13 from seven overs and will loom as a key figure if Australia is to get back into the contest.

Murphy’s first at bat took in five deliveries before he was adjudged lbw by Ravindra Jadeja for a duck.

On first glance it appeared as the home side was appealing for a catch, with Murphy referring the decision.

But the Decision Review System showed that Murphy did not hit the ball, rather hit on pad, with the ball tracker saying it was going on to hit the stumps.

Murphy was earlier presented his baggy green by fellow spinner Nathan Lyon, with his family, including dad Jamie, uncle Troy and brother Joel, among those in attendance.

Australia faced 63.5 overs for its 177, with Marnus Labuschagne top scoring on 49, Steve Smith (37), Alex Carey (36) and Peter Handscomb (31) getting starts.

Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers, taking 5-47 from 22 overs and Ravichandran Ashwin collected 3-42, including his 450th Test wicket.

Play continues today from 3pm.
