Murray Dairy is backing the next generation

Twenty members of the Murray Dairy Young Dairy Network are heading to the US in May.

Murray Dairy is committed to backing the next generation of young dairy leaders through a new 12-month structured program on leadership, community, succession and personal development.

The Murray Dairy YDN Dairy Develop Program, which features a tour of the dairying regions of Wisconsin and California in the United States, is a tailored offering designed to provide young people already employed in the local industry with the support, network and development tools to stay and progress their careers within the Murray Dairy region.

Delivered by the Murray Dairy Young Dairy Network, the program will use local and international examples of leadership and career development.

Murray Dairy regional manager Jenny Wilson said it was crucial to recognise and invest in a strong cohort of future local leaders.

“This program will show young people currently working on Murray Dairy region dairy operations that there is plenty of potential for opportunities to stay in the region while creating an innovative and rewarding career in dairy,” Ms Wilson said.

“Providing tangible pathways and examples for young people working in dairy is a crucial element of retaining the next generation of industry leaders on local dairy farms.”

Program participants will also have the opportunity to hear from a number of established leaders within the local dairy industry on the topics of succession, career development and leadership to showcase tangible pathways to long-term career satisfaction.

While visiting the US in May, participants will experience the similar farming systems of California dairies, deep dive into irrigation and water issues, connect with University of California Davis and be exposed to corporate operations and large-scale barns.

A visit to Wisconsin will uncover succession planning with a look at family owned, smaller operations.

“Murray Dairy understands the importance of personal reflection and will incorporate development days to continue to foster a wider 12-month learning experience developing dairy careers,” Ms Wilson said.

“This will allow participants to reflect on, and discuss, their learnings and apply this knowledge to outline future career goals.”

The 2023 program has been met with a great level of interest from young people working in the local dairy industry.

Twenty members of the Murray Dairy Young Dairy Network have been selected from an impressive cohort of applicants to participate in the upcoming tour.
