Murray River residents considering running for council are invited to take part in a free workshop on the topic.

The session, which will take place on Tuesday, June 4, will focus on the experience of being a councillor and feature insights from current councillors.

Chief executive Terry Dodds said the workshop aims to help people better understand the role and responsibilities of an elected member.

“Councillors play a crucial role in the decision-making process at council and it is essential anyone considering nominating to run in the upcoming election understands what is involved,” he said.

“As a council body, we do all we can to support our elected members, and we hope the candidate briefing will provide a good overview of what is involved in the role and answer all the questions prospective candidates may have.

“If you’re considering running for council, or maybe even just thinking about it, I encourage you to join this session and hear directly from councillors about what it is really like.”

The workshop will be held at the Murray River Council building, 52 Perricoota Rd, Moama, from 5pm to 8.30pm.

Other candidate information sessions will be made available if required.

“Whilst the initial workshop run by Local Government NSW is slated for Moama, we want to make sure all prospective candidates have the opportunity to ask questions and get the information they require,” Mr Dodds said.

“So we are asking anyone who can’t attend the Moama workshop to please register with us, and we will arrange a session with you accordingly.”

Prospective candidates interested in attending the candidate briefing in Moama or at a later date should register by visiting www.murrayriver.nsw.gov.au

The Murray River Council elections will take place on September 14. Both Murray River and Campaspe Shire councils are required to hold elections this year.
