Ned Kelly’s mother: one-woman show this weekend only

Local theatre: Let Us Entertain You present a one-woman play, Ned Kelly's Mother, which will be performed in the old Benalla courthouse.

Let Us Entertain You (LUEY) is proudly supporting the play Ned Kelly’s Mother.

It will be presented for one weekend only with three performances on June 25 and 26.

LUEY president Ross Bootes said the play was a one-woman show that explored a different side to the Kelly story, that of the life and struggles of Ellen Kelly.

“She had to bring up a large family in very tough circumstances and then cope with the deaths of her two beloved sons, Ned and Dan,” Mr Bootes said.

“It is not only an honour to bring this professional production to Benalla to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first show.

“We are really excited about staging the production in the Old Courthouse in Arundel St.

“Not only is this the site of the famous Ned Kelly breakout and brawl, but it is also where Ellen Kelly herself faced a charge of ‘Furious riding in a public place’.

“This direct connection across the years between the subject of a performance and the venue is amazing.

“We are very grateful to the Anglican Church for making the venue available.”

The performances will be on Saturday, June 25, at 2pm and 7.30pm; and Sunday, June 26, at 2pm.

Tickets are $25, and can be purchased at either Aggy’s Furniture, 112 Bridge St (cash only), or online at www.trybooking.com/bztog
